Check Fraud Prevention Tips For Consumers And Businesses

By Kevin Phillips

Check fraud is perhaps one of the biggest problems for consumers and businesses alike. The estimated total amount that check fraud costs is into the billions of dollars a year. Many consumers and businesses lack certain safeguards for check fraud prevention but these tips may help to combat this problem in the future.

One tip that both businesses and consumers can do to prevent this problem is to secure their financial documents under lock and key and limit access to them to one or two people. When you limit access to the checks, this can reduce the possibility of having checks come up missing or being copied by other sophisticated means such as with computer technology. If a defrauder can get checks from you they can copy them over and over again with different information leaving you liable for the money stolen from your accounts.

The use of rubber signature stamps is also an easy target for criminals to write checks and use the stamp to sign the endorsers name exactly as it is. The banks or retailers cash the checks without knowing it is counterfeit. It also creates a liability for the individual as they cannot easily prove their rubber stamp was used without their knowledge.

Mailing checks can also prove to be challenging as criminals will follow you to the mailbox and retrieve the checks from the mailbox. They also follow mail carriers and steal mail hoping that checks are contained within them. The best method is to mail your checks inside the post office where the mail receptacle is more secure and can be better monitored.

Each month you should reconcile your account to prevent possible problems with stolen checks. Reconciling will be your first alert to any unauthorized activity on your account. Checks should always be used in numerical sequence so fraud can be detected more easily. You should never use checks out of their numerical sequence.

If you are a business cashing any checks, look at the check closely for any discrepancies in how it looks and the information that it contains. Look especially at the document numbers written in the upper right corner and match it up with the MICR numbers on the bottom which should contain the same number. MICR is the magnetic ink written on the bottom of the document that can't easily be duplicated. MICR ink is dull and computer generated ink is shiny this is one tip to prevent being defrauded by criminals who counterfeit checks.

If you order your checks from a reputable source, ensure that you have certain security features in place to prevent fraud and counterfeiting. One such security feature is the watermark which is not easily duplicated and can help to prevent crimes against your account. Other security features include perforation marks and special paper that prevents checks from being washed and reused.

These tips should help you to combat crimes against your accounts and give you some peace of mind. There are many other methods to help you and these are only a few of them. If you want further information you should do your research on how to prevent this crime and get more methods to use to secure your financial documents in the future.
