Laser markings are long lasting and since they are intended to be permanent they provide high resistance levels to acid, scratches and heat. It is for this reason that items marked with laser technology can be used under various situations without one worrying about destroying the markings. During marking, the substance being marked does not get destroyed in any way so long as the equipment settings are set correctly.

This technology can be used for marking virtually any kind of material. Among the materials which are commonly marked using this technology are metals, laminates, films, foils, and plastics. Examples of metals include gold, bronze, copper, silver, titanium, stainless steel, aluminum, and platinum, among several others. Under plastics, examples include PMMA, polycarbonate, ABS, and polyamide.

The marking equipment can be used to perform the various processes involving laser. One of such process is called annealing marking. This is a special etching process done using lasers on metals. When this process is done, lasers cause metal surfaces to undergo oxidation beneath the surface. What happens is that the metal changes color at the surface.

Staining is the other process that can be performed. Here, application of lasers causes chemical change in the material being heated. In turn, this causes a change in color of the surface of the material. Different color shades are produced depending on what the chemical compositions of the material is.

A special machine is used to undertake this whole process. This machine can generate both forms of lasers, that is, CO and solid-state lasers. The material used to make the work piece usually determine the type of laser to be used.
